Summer 2023

Monthly Update

As summer draws to a close we take a look back at what is a typically busy time for the construction industry.

Out of Office

Inkpen Downie Architects kicked off the summer season with our traditional BBQ event. A much-anticipated gathering, this annual occasion brought together our dedicated team members and partners, for a relaxed and enjoyable time of casual camaraderie. It not only marked the beginning of summer but also provided a wonderful opportunity for informal conversations and mingling, fostering a positive atmosphere within our professional community.

The ideal weather conditions in June provided an ideal atmosphere for the annual Daniel Connal Partnership Sandcastle Competition, an event that we proudly emerged victorious from in the previous year. Regrettably, although we experienced another splendid time this year with exceptional design and execution, our success did not quite match the stellar outcome of our previous triumph.

Project Progress

Within the office, our dedicated team was engaged in combined efforts to meet project deadlines and milestones, as well as ensuring steady progress on our on-site projects.

We are thrilled to share some significant milestones achieved by Inkpen Downie Architects recently.

Firstly, we are delighted to announce the commencement of construction on our Plantation Hall project. This venture will witness the completion of a brand new extension by the end of autumn, offering the community an inviting lobby and foyer space. We are grateful for the diligent efforts of our contractor, Lexden Contracts, who are working towards ensuring the timely delivery of this extension to benefit the local community.

Another project to begin its construction stage was Roxwell Church where the latest works have recently commenced. Building upon the extensive roof repairs carried out previously, this project is dedicated to incorporating essential internal additions. The primary objective is to enhance the functionality of the historic building by introducing a toilet and kitchen facilities for the congregation's convenience. With these new amenities, Roxwell Church will be better equipped to serve the evolving needs of the community and its members.

Moreover, it is with great pleasure that we inform you about another noteworthy milestone reached near Braintree, Essex. Our project, known as Rectory Meadow, has successfully obtained planning permission for the construction of three large family dwellings on the grounds of an old quarry. We, at Inkpen Downie Architects, take immense pride in designing this development, which not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the abandoned quarry but also brings a positive transformation to its surrounding neighborhood.

Furthermore, we have received competitive tenders for a church and two private dwellings located across Essex, and we look forward to bringing you further updates when they have commenced on site with their respective contractors.

Lastly, working with Colchester City Council’s Bid manager, Colchester Borough Council and Community 360° we have successfully supported a Heritage Lottery Fund Bid Application for the transformation of Holy Trinity Church, on Trinity Street, Colchester, to a new Community Hub.

We are thankful for the opportunities to contribute to these exceptional projects, and we eagerly anticipate their completion. Stay tuned for more updates on our ongoing ventures and future accomplishments.

Completion

St. Peter’s Church in Colchester successfully reached Practical Completion, marking a significant milestone in the project. As the architects of this endeavour, we have thoroughly relished the opportunity to work on this remarkable undertaking. The design, exceptional quality, and immaculate finish of the church have garnered praise from all those involved in the project as well as its subsequent users. We extend our thanks to Colin and the entire team at Bakers of Danbury for their unwavering dedication and remarkable craftsmanship in completing the construction of the new internal addition. Their efforts have played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life. For a more comprehensive glimpse into the project, we invite you to explore our project page, where you will find a collection of pictures and detailed information that capture the essence of St. Peter’s Church in Colchester.

We are delighted to announce that our team member, Joe Nicholson, has recently graduated from Loughborough University with his Part 1 degree. On behalf of everyone at the office, we would like to extend our congratulations to Joe for this fantastic achievement. We eagerly anticipate welcoming him back to the team in October, when he resumes his role with us.

In the upcoming academic year, we will be providing support to Joe and Sorcha as they embark on their first year of Masters study. During this time, they will be simultaneously working for the practice and completing their academic coursework. In 2024, they will return to their respective universities to complete the remaining portion of their course. Additionally, we will also be extending our support to Barney, who is currently undertaking his studies in pursuance of Part 3 qualification, which he is scheduled to complete in 2024.
