Copt House

Sensitive alteration and extension of a Grade II Listed detached commercial building in a highly sought after and desirable location within Chelmsford City Centre. Application for a change of use to transform the building into a high quality residential development.

The building is currently owned and occupied by a local firm of solicitors. They were looking to relocate their operations and apply for a change of use to convert the building into a set of unique 1 & 2 bedroom apartments. This will be split between the existing listed property and an extension to the rear, together with associated parking and secure cycle storage provision.

The existing building layout has been sensitively designed to work around the existing structure and features in order to retain and preserve as much historic fabric as possible.

The principal entrance to the historic building is retained and forms an ante space for the whole development with a generous vestibule and access to the elegant early 19th century main stair. External landscaping, including new green walls will be incorporated to further enhance and improve the historic setting.

The original building is a Designated Heritage Asset with Grade II Listing. The design acknowledges and takes careful consideration of those qualities that give the building historic significance while at the same time making changes that will allow the building to be sustained.
