"Inkpen Downie converted a second barn on the site into a “drama barn” providing a teaching studio for children who aspire to a career in the performing arts"
'Round peg in a square hole can look good'
This project involved the comprehensive restoration of the historic building envelope and then the insertion of a contemporary interior. The new development had to incorporate a strategy for accommodating bats in a new outbuilding constructed for the purpose.
Simple, plain white curved forms sit surprisingly comfortably within the confines of the rustic, heavily textured timber of the historic frame, although in places it leads to some quirky juxtapositions.
The result is a large comfortable house well insulated and heated with underfloor heating via an air source heat pump.
At the same time Inkpen Downie converted a second barn on the site into a “drama barn” making the best use of the open space by providing a teaching studio for children who aspire to a career in the performing arts.
