The White House: Sustainable Building Techniques

This project required the demolition of rather poor additions to a fine quality Georgian frontage and their replacement with a large extension.

The design of the extension is symmetrical in form and addresses the gardens and landscape to the rear of the property.

The existing house is a light brick, whilst the new extension is timber framed and timber clad. The timber cladding gives the new extension an informal feel, and has allowed us to explore a more sustainable approach to the technology.

A timber frame system developed in Sweden uses slow-growing wood without chemical adhesives and with minimum waste. Warmcel recycled paper insulation is used to create a breathable construction.
