Energy Efficient Writer's Studio - Mick Inkpen

This single storey building combines a studio, a store and garden shed, and is nestled in the hillside next to the writer's home. The outside of the building is clad in local materials, wooden boarding and clay tiles, but on the inside an elegant steel frame, which holds up the building, can be seen.

Small openings on the north side of the building and large openings to the south make the most of the sunny aspect and help the building absorb heat from the sun. High levels of insulation and good draught stripping combine with under floor heating to produce a very stable environment. All the small windows on the north side can be opened and this provides highly adjustable gust-free ventilation during the summer months. The shading prevents excessive solar gain when the sun is at its highest.

The building and the landscaped courtyard between the house and the studio were designed to link the studio to the house yet keep work and play separate. Inkpen Downie also designed alterations to the kitchen to look out onto this courtyard space.
