Nursery extension for a church
The existing building was constructed in 1990 and is located in Langdon Hills a modern estate, part of the district of Basildon. The site is more or less rectangular bounded by Forest Glade road to the south, an old peoples residential care home and housing to the west and parkland to the north and east. The site included a hard surfaced marked area for car parking accessed to the west of the existing building from Forest Glade road and a walled play area to the East.
The site is close to the local infant & junior school. The building is single storey with some storage within the roof space. It is a part framed steel & brick structure with a standing seam stainless steel roof on timber gang nail trusses. The building provides both church and communal facilities. The proposals were to erect a new single storey building adjacent to the existing with a glazed link. The new building provides two child care areas with shared kitchen and toilet accommodation and offices.

The extension is connected to the existing building in a manner, which allows the childcare to operate as a single entity, secure and separated from other uses, which share the building. Children and staff have direct access to dedicated toilets, kitchen and offices and an outdoor, secure play area. The client was particularly concerned to retain the use of the existing entrance as the main access for parents bringing their children to the facility. This allows the client to monitor those entering and leaving the building and to provide continuity in supervision between the day care, breakfast, lunch and after school clubs.Minimal alterations were made to the parking area with new paving to provide proper access to comply with requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.
