Sensitive Extension to a Grade 1 Listed Church
Good design can be the key to unlock the potential of a church building and inspire its congregation. With new facilities and more practical spaces, churches can be more useful and reach a wider congregation.
All Saints, Purleigh is Grade 1 Listed, dating back to the 14th Century. The original church was built using a variety of materials including flint and bricks. By confidently using the same materials the extension strikes a balance between new and old that is suitable for contemporary use, but does not render the old building 'out of date'.
The new building contains a meeting room, kitchen and WC's, and is fully accessible for wheelchair users.
The extension is a quiet and respectful building, simple but designed to a high standard. This extension received Maldon District Council's Conservation and Design Award in 2003. The judges "were impressed by this carefully considered addition with its simplistic form and crisp detailing which respects the ancient origins of the church".
All Saints, Purleigh has also found fame by featuring in a BBC TV series "Murder Detectives".
