Refurbishment of Suffolk Constabulary Reception
Suffolk is the safest policing region in the UK, nevertheless their police station "front desk" staff have to greet the widest cross section of the public, who are often in severe distress, 24 hours a day.
Using Home Office funding, Suffolk Constabulary commissioned Inkpen Downie to use our design skills to help them comply with the Disability Discrimination Act. Our brief also encompasses the wish to improve both the service and the image they convey to the public.
We carried out Access Audits of the stations, together with a consultation process with station staff. A timber mock-up of a prototype reception desk was produced to allow experienced staff to make their comments on the initial design, which allows for staff and visitor to sit or stand, and is flexible in its use of unobtrusive security screens. A force-wide programme of staff training will complement changes to the buildings and contribute to the eventual successful commissioning of the new reception areas.
The desk is designed as a kit of parts that can be used in each of the stations alongside a toolbox of lighting, signeage and finishes to convey a consistent message. The choice of construction and materials reflects one of the more extreme requirements for durability in use we have encountered to date. Nevertheless, through careful choice of materials and good detailing, these durable qualities will be concealed behind a softer, welcoming appearance.
The desk has now been installed in stations across the Suffolk Police area.
