Conversion of Former Hospital Boiler House

Alterations and large extension on Grade II listed house conversion from former hospital building. Once the new owners started to use this house they decided that it almost seemed to be back to front. The staircase giving access to the tower was an ugly intrusion in their sitting room and the challenge was to turn a developers conversion into a bespoke design for a warm and luxurious family home. As well as this it was required that the building was as sustainable and energy efficient as possible. Inkpen Downie prepared a design that reconfigured the interior of the building and added an extension.

The house is situated in a special landscape area with a presumption against new development and it was necessary to convince the planning authority that the design was acceptable by a careful analysis of the landscape setting and the views in and out as well as assessing the important characteristics of the historic building to be enhanced and retained.
In keeping with the rural rear garden of the property the extension is clad in cedar
and blends with the paintwork of the original building.

For the interior glazing was used including on the staircases to use as much natural light and be as environmentally cost effective as possible.
