Debden New Memorial Hall

Debden Memorial Hall was completed in 1922 to provide a public hall for the people of Debden. The original structure is a simple rectangular wooden army hut and this has been added to over the years to provide for the many varied demands placed on a small community building.

In 1983 the building was further added to by the erection of a community run village shop which was constructed at the southern end of the original building though without any internal connection to it.

Despite it's many enlargements a point has been reached where the existing hall can no longer meet the requirements of Debden's community. This is an issue of space and conflicting user needs as well as one of comfort and sustainability. The existing hall is no longer viable for further enlargement and at the same time its fabric and services are no longer adequate to provide for the today's expectations.

The proposals are for a replacement of the existing village hall and shop that also incorporates the Post Office. Both are open every day and serve the community in a number of different ways. The Shop provides a place where people can meet, buy basic essentials, post letters and collect pensions.

The Hall provides a venue for functions, dance classes, a pre-school, and meetings of local clubs and associations including the Parish Council, Village Hall Committee and British Legion.

  • Principal uses of the hall include:

  • Pre-school group
  • Dance/Ballet
  • Parties;
  • Meetings;
  • Table Tennis;
  • Plays/Performances
  • British Legion – War Memorial
  • Youth Group;
  • Keep Fit

    Flexibilty is a key feature of the new design. The use of acoustic moveable walls will allow the building by more than one user at a time and ensures that the building will be versatile in accommodating new uses in the future.
