Boreham Village Hall, A Community Building

This village hall was designed to allow the former hall to remain standing during the construction. The project demonstrates that the ‘humble’ village hall can be a substantial civic building, reflecting its central role in the life of the community.

The new building provides improved facilities, access and parking for the local community who were extensively consulted. The building was required to be energy efficient, vandal resistant, but light and welcoming. In line with our commitment to sustainability it is energy efficient and easy to maintain so that running costs are minimised.

Having received the first ever Essex Police 'Secured by Design’ (commercial) certificate for Plantation Hall at Heybridge, we incorporated many of the same security features at Boreham. Natural light is brought into the building from above which reduces vulnerability to vandal attack. Underfloor heating avoids the need for radiators and provides a safer and more comfortable environment, particularly for the elderly and inquisitive toddlers.

The RIBA Community Architecture Fund funded the feasibility study and the total project was within the £300,000 budget. Boreham Village Hall was the first scheme we designed to comply with the Children’s Act.
