Performing Arts Centre, Colchester Sixth Form College

Inkpen Downie have won the RIBA competition to design a new performing arts facility for The Sixth Form College, Colchester.
This new facility will replace the 1950's gymnasium which stands near the entrance to the college's main site. The existing building no longer meets current disabled access and insulation requirements and will be replaced by a modern resource for the college's fast growing music, drama and dance department. A new gym is already under construction in the mid-site development due for completion this summer.
Our winning concept design, shown here, is to create a flexible building that can be used in many ways by the College. A large, flexible performance space can be used for public events, and also divides up into three teaching studios.
By using a design competition to choose their architect, the College have confirmed their commitment to making a high quality building for their students, which works well and provides best value.
